Bolstering Internal Innovation
A J5 Training Program.
A Different Approach to Training
We believe that the best learning is accomplished through “learning by doing”: applying taught concepts to real problems and projects. Our approach to training an experiential learning program that leverages service design and design thinking approaches and skills up internal team members to be able to apply these methodologies in their work.
Training and Curriculum Delivery
This is an abridged training program for individuals who have done pre-work required to prepare for this second stage course. The program consists of 5 main teaching modules that occur over 5 full day, in-person sessions. These modules can be spread out, but it is our recommendation to keep them as close together in time as possible. This program includes 30 hours of live instruction.
Coaching and Mentorship
Prior to the modules, additional time is required from participants to complete preparatory work to be able to make the most of the training time. Coaching and mentorship as a part of this pre-work is included to support participants.
Evaluation and Certification
Course participants are evaluated by instructors throughout course progression, complete a self-assessment, and are certified in the “Bolstering Internal Innovation” course.
Curriculum Outline
-
To set the right conditions for the program work to occur, participants will be assigned pre-work to interview community members around their chosen problem in order to bring diverse perspectives and insights to the modules.
This pre-work will also establish training supports required for successful progression through the program modules.
-
Participants will learn what makes a good design problem, how to create insights from pre-work, how to synthesize those insights, and how to refine and frame their chosen problem accordingly. They will also learn about the connections of the design process to systems thinking, design, and impact.
-
Participants will learn about the mindsets required to engage successfully in ideation and participate in several different ideation techniques to create several possible solutions before learning how to evaluate and prioritize ideas to move forward.
-
Participants will take the most promising ideas from the previous session, expand on them, and bring them into reality through prototyping. They will learn what makes a testable prototype and how to validate their ideas with community using this technique.
-
Participants how to create and refine prototyping test plans as well as how to run mock testing sessions.
-
Participants will learn how to iterate on prototypes with feedback through live testing with community members and stakeholders.
-
As a part of evaluation and certification, J5 Design will engage participants in a process to determine success of the program with a view to:
Coach participants through any loose ends that need tying up in their projects and close any gaps that have resulted from progressing through the modules (an expected and normal outcome from working in a new way for many teams)
Work with team members to incorporate and co-design curriculum feedback to serve organizational needs moving forward
J5 Design will also provide a summary report of work done and objectives met in the training program.
Costs
This program is designed to be taken by a minimum of 8 students at a time. The cost associated with this course is $5,000 per learner ($40,000 + GST per group). This cost is inclusive of all content, including pre-program support and post-program follow-up and evaluation.
Let’s learn together.
